A Day in the Life of an Invisible Leash Franchise Owner

A Day in the Life of an Invisible Leash Franchise Owner

When I first started in business, I woke up at 5:00 AM every single morning.

Not to an alarm. I woke up to 20 barking dogs in a kennel less than 50 feet from my bedroom.

Once the dogs were fed and let out, the cleaning started. Cleaning kennels never ends. As soon as you finish mopping the last run, the dog in the first one has already peed again.

By 7:00 AM, the doors opened, and the daily circus kicked into high gear:

  • Daycare drop-offs flooding the lobby.

  • New boarders checking in with bags of food and medication instructions.

  • The grooming room turning into a loud, humid, hair-filled madhouse of barking dogs and screaming high-velocity dryers.

The daycare dogs required constant, vigilant supervision to prevent fights. The boarding dogs needed continuous care. And at the end of the day, when the daycare dogs finally went home, we had to sweep the floors and get ready to teach evening training classes.

A version of this went on 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

If just one hourly employee called in sick or quit, the entire operation threatened to collapse under the stress.

After 10 years of this grind, I was completely burned out. I sold the business and walked away from the pet industry for good.

But just like Michael Corleone said in The Godfather Part III:

"Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"

When I decided to get back into the dog business, I made a non-negotiable rule: I was only going to do what I actually loved doing—training dogs.

To protect my sanity and my bank account, I created a strict "NOT-TO-DO" list:

  1. NO taking dogs into my overnight care. The owner must always be present and involved.

  2. NO boarding.

  3. NO daycare.

  4. NO grooming.

  5. NO massive, high-rent, debt-heavy facilities.

  6. NO relying on armies of unreliable hourly staff.

  7. NO 70-hour workweeks.

  8. ONLY deliver one high-value, core service: Dog Training.

Because I defined exactly what I won't do, I built a business that serves my life instead of consuming it.

Today, my day starts at 10:00 or 11:00 AM. I work 4 days a week. I make significantly more money, keep my overhead microscopic, and spend as much time with my family as I want.

And the absolute best part? When I lock the door at the end of a session, my day is completely over. No overnight alarms. No 2:00 AM emergencies. Just pure peace of mind.
