What an 11-Year-Old Pretzel Salesman Taught Me About Dog Training

The first time I heard that, my immediate reaction was: WOW, this guy really loves pretzels. Why would anyone be that obsessed with a piece of salted, twisted dough? I like a good soft pretzel as much as the next guy, but I can take them or leave them.

Then I listened to Dan DiZio, CEO and co-founder of Philly Pretzel Factory. By the time he finished talking, my entire perspective had shifted.

The short version of his story is this: When he was 11, a neighbor who baked pretzels couldn't make a delivery. He handed Dan 1,000 pretzels and told him, “If you can sell these on the corner, you keep half.”

At the time, Dan was earning a $9-a-week allowance. By the end of that afternoon, he had pocketed nearly $200 selling pretzels on the streets of Philadelphia. He made six months of allowance in a few hours. He was hooked.

His journey from that day forward was wild. He skipped so much school in the ninth grade to sell pretzels that his mom almost went to jail for it. Later in life, he took a job as a stockbroker, but quit within a week because he couldn't get pretzels out of his head. He even survived a near-fatal battle with illness along the way.

Who would have thought a soft pretzel could drive a man's entire life?

What struck me wasn't just the hustle; it was the singular, driving mission.

Dan didn’t just want to bake dough. He wanted to build a proven system that allowed everyday people to share that success across hundreds of locations.

I know exactly how he feels.

Since 1995, I have lived and breathed dog training. There is nothing more satisfying than watching the look on an owner’s face the moment they realize they finally have control of their dog.

I’ve spent the last three decades in the trenches refining a system that is practical, repeatable, and wildly effective. Along the way, I wrote four books, built online training platforms, and helped train over 20,000 dogs.

A few years ago, I realized there’s a limit to how many dogs one person can reach. I wanted to help more families while giving passionate dog lovers a real path to business ownership.

That is why I created the INVISIBLE LEASH® Franchise System.
